Default 2008 Tail Lights not working, please help!

Hey guys, new to the forum. Thanks in advance for all the help.

I have a 2008 PT Cruiser, and recently noticed that BOTH of my taillights are out. I checked every fuse under the hood, and none are broken, and the brake lights worked so it doesn't seem like a power issue. I took both bulbs out, the filaments looked ok but the bulbs were slightly blackened so I replaced the bulbs, which didn't fix the problem.

I don't have a voltage meter where I am, I'm not sure if the 3 wire harness uses a shared ground and different live wires for each function (seems like the more likely scenario) or separate grounds that run back to some control switch. Anyways, my research shows that the fuse box under the hood is the only one so I'm stumped. Every other light in the car appears to be working fine.

My last guess is that there is either a short in both wiring harness (both seems unlikely but if it's a common issue with faulty harnesses I suppose it's possible) or a short in the wire before it splits to both sides. Any suggestions would be really helpful, otherwise I'll have to wait til I can get to my tools

Thanks again!

Ok, now I'm really confused. I just went back outside this morning to mess with it some more and the tail lights are working again, no idea why. The brake lights were working the whole time, it was just the tail lights, so I'm stumped.

This makes it seem like there is a loose short somewhere which means finding the issue if they go out again will probably be harder. Any thoughts? Anyone have a diagram/description of where the wires actually run from the front to the tail lights/where they split/etc?

Hopefully I won't need it but just in case...

Do the sockets look corroded?
Black wire is usually ground.
My daughter's GT just had same problem, but her problem was cured by bulbs.
