Default serpentine belt tensioner

hidy ho, im finally getting my wifes rig put back together from the timing belt job. when i removed the ac pwr steering belt it was simple to release the tensioner to remove belt. however, upon assembly the drive belt is way too loose. the only part thats moved was the ps pump and it went back into same mounting spot so no adjustment there. tensioner still functions but just does tension suffiently. there are some gage marks on it. can the old be adjusted or has the belt stretched too much to reuse? thx,

Hopefully someone with more experience with the serpentine belt will come along and help you. It seems to me that belt wouldn't stretch that much so the tensioner wouldn't take up the slack, especially since it fit tight when you took it off. (It did fit tight before, right?) To release the tension on the tensioner to take the belt off, you just turned the center nut clockwise, right. Not sure why it wouldn't take up the tension now.

Hm, since you turned the tensioner bolt clockwise to loosen, maybe (after putting the belt back on), you could try turning the bolt counter clockwise ... slowly till it stops.

But my guess is, the serpentine belt adjuster is shot--or your belt is too worn. Because I've heard that when putting the belt back on, you also have to turn the bolt clockwise--just to get the belt on--then the tensioner will do the tightening when you turn the bolt counterwise till it stops and then release the bolt.

The Hayne's manual shows which mark indicates a worn belt. It's the mark that is to the right of the middle mark. If this "far-right" mark lines up to the Belt-length indicator mark, which is located behind the tensioner, then the belt's worn for sure.

If you are changing the timing belt you might as well change the serpentine belt(s) as well. They're cheap and it'll save you time down the road.
