Default Pennzoil Synchromesh Ok for '02 Cruiser?

I replaced the clutch pak in my '02 PT Cruiser yesterday, everything went very smooth, but now I have a headache trying to find a reasonably price alternative to the OEM recommended gear oil.

The sticker on the gear box says to use Mopar # 4874465. I know that's my Best bet, but it's terribly expensive, and where I live, pretty hard to come by. I'm willing to try an alternative lube that others are using successfully.

Here's what I have come up with.

Pennzoil Synchromesh.

Convert over to the ATF+4.

Wait till next week sometime and spend a small fortune on Chrysler's Tranny oil.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I believe Chrysler only uses ATF+4...that's what my Getrag 5 speed takes

Alot of readily available choices in ATF+4. And cheap, too.

Maybe I should switch? Is that a good idea?

I have an '01 as well and as far as I know the only option is the $20 per quart Mopar oil.

I know in '02 they went to the atf+4 in the manual trans. I don't think anything in the trans changed... I haven't been brave enough to try it. I think I am just gonna suck it up and spend the money for the proper stuff.

I use Amsoil MTF Fluid in both my Getrags

Their MTF is about the same viscosity as the ATF and same pour point, much higher flash point since it is a full PAO base. It probably will not shear like the ATF

Well, I went with the Pennzoil Synchromesh. About three qt's to fill the tranny. After searching the interweb for awhile, I found some Dodge Neon sites where the members were discussing this very subject, in detail. Apparently, the early Neons share the same tranny as our Cruisers. Seems the Pennzoil is an acceptable alternative. We'll see. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Any of these lubricants will work, including plain old ATF.

My Neon has 289,000 miles on it ...

The 2000 Neon spontaneously went to AFT after Mopar demanding use of
their their expenso oil for years!

I used Amsoil synchromesh in my 02 manual gearbox. I have about 50K on it since I changed over to the Amsoil. I think I found out about it from a neon forum, cant quite remember. If you look at the specs on Amsoil's site it says it meets the requirements that Mopar calls for with this trans.
