Question 2007, power steering pump

My '07 Cruiser has a power steering leak. I've searched here in the forum and found lots of horror stories about how hard it is to get to the pump, but no real step by step instructions.

Are there any simple instructions on how to access the pump? How to see where the fluid is leaking at the pump? (Bearing? One of the lines? etc.)

Last time I was under the car, the rack was dry and it had some kind of fluid at the belts. I thought it was oil spilled during a fill, so didn't think a lot about it at the time.

Thanks!

Thanks... but that page doesn't say much - and what it does say is wrong.

...or is there something on the page that I'm missing?

Question Re: 2007, power steering pump

Bump...

I need to get this pump/hose fixed before the cold weather gets here.

I can't tell if a line is bad, or the fluid is coming out of the pump, but it's definitely coming from the area where the pump is. It's almost impossible to see anything around that area.

I hear that you need to remove the A/C condenser to do the job - or at least if a shop does the job. Is this true?

Any hints at getting at the pump, even if it's just see where the leak is located?

When I did my wife's steering pump, I removed the drive belt, the grille & upper radiator support, radiator fan and maybe the radiator (don't remember exactly). After that I had enough room to remove the pump bracket and pump. Before that, make sure you reach under the pump and loose the two hose nuts, otherwise they'll be hard to remove them once the pump is loose. BTW, you don't have to remove the A/C condenser or A/C compressor.

That link is far from accurate.

To remove the pump, take the passenger front wheel off, remove the splash shield and belt shield, remove the belt, remove the a/c compressor and move it aside.

Remove the grille, loosen the radiator, remove the hoses from the pump, unbolt the pump, and pull it out from the top, while pulling the radiator toward the front of the car for clearance. You do not need to remove the radiator, just be careful with it.

I don't remember removing the A/C compressor, because it's underneath the pump....but the radiator fan yes.

Thanks guys... that sounds reasonable.

I've never had the radiator out, but it shouldn't add much work to the process... Just some mess.

I've already had to replace the radiator fan, so I know how to get that out.

If/When I get it done I'll be sure to post back here.

Chrysler procedure is to remove the compressor. Probably to give you more room or something.

I was able to change my '01 pump from the top without removing the radiator, fans, AC pump, etc. - Wasn't easy, but doable.....

That being said, as I was removing it, I realized that the lower line had worked itself loose. Causing it to leak all of the fluid out. I went ahead and swapped it out for the newer / lower miles unit, but the original problem was the lower line itself.
