Default 2007 PT - gas gauge drops to zero and cars stops on road

Hi there
I have had my PT cruiser for 2 months, and I love it, but got a little nervous today. Was driving for 3 minutes, came to red light, when I went to step on the gas nothing happened, the gas gauge dropped from half to empty and there was absolutely zero power. I turned the key and it was all quiet. I put the car in park then back to drive, pressed on the gas the gauge popped back up to half and I drove again. I stopped about 5 more times today and it never happened again. I have to get an oil change down so will take it in for that, but before I tell them what happened wondering if anyone has thoughts on it...Could it just be a loose battery cable or something worse?

Thanks so much

I think it is one of 2 things -
1) Your car battery is going - have it checked - there are lots of places that do it for free.
2) Your ignition switch is failing. Do you have a lot of junk on your keyring? Take it off.

Nothing on my keyring so that is good.
Got the oil change done today and had them check the battery and it was fine.

But funny enough, I was searching this forum and found someone else with a similar problem and someone told them to check if their gas cap was fully closed to ensure 3 clicks or air can get in (something like that)...well, surprise surprise, the last fill up I barely put the cap on...so I tightened it and it was find all day today. I was wondering if this 40 degree heat we are getting every day might have effected the car.....

So do you think I am safe to say it was the same issue as the other person re: cap not on? I specifically asked about the battery and they didn't want to sell me a new one....so that is shocking...but must mean it is okay..

oh and I just saw you live in NJ, USA so when I say 40 degree heat, I mean 104 degrees for you :0 ha!

Wow, that was rambly sorry....
But thanks for your response...

I doubt gas cap has anything to do with it - It can cause an error light for emissions...
One more thing to check - see if battery cables are tight - you should not be able to get any movement where the cables are bolted to the battery.
You buy it used? Prior owner could've had junk on key ring and weakened ignition switch.
