Default Can bad struts effect front end alignment?

Ok heres the story. I just bought my wife a 01 PT with 138,000 miles on it. When I test drove it. it pulls hard to the right and the front tires were shot so I new it needed a alignment and maybe some front end work. Dropped it off at the shop today to get new tires and the front nd fixed. The shop called me back and said that the struts were shot as well as the bushings and that they couldnt do an alignment without replacing them. 500 dollars. Ive never heard of bad struts affecting the alignment. Is this a known issue with the PT's or am I being ripped off??

I don't think struts will affect the alignment unless the shaft is bent. That happened to me when I first bought my car, but sometimes you can get away by using the Eibach alignment kit.

The strut controls the rate of travel of the coil spring and no, it does not affect the alignment unless bent like xtrmdc2 said.

Well, your right BUT, bad struts will constantly throw the alignment off because they can't absorb the shock so your suspension components will and you'll start all over again with needing a new alignment.

SO, no they won't affect the alignment at present but you'll some need another alignment.

One Side Wear
When an inner or outer rib wears faster than than the rest of the tire, the need for wheel alignment is indicated. There is excessive camber in the front suspension, causing the wheel to lean too much to the inside or outside and putting too much load on one side of the tire. The car may simply need the wheels aligned, but misalignment could be due to sagging springs, worn ball joints, or worn control arm bushings. Because load has a great affect on alignment, be sure the car is loaded the way it's normally driven when you have the wheels aligned; this is particularly important with independent rear suspension cars.
