Default HELP!!!! bad oil leak

We have a 2003 PT Cruiser, 5 speed. Clutch was replaced 6 months ago. All of a sudden we have a really bad oil leak (3 quarts in a week, and never had to add oil between oil changes at all before!)... not dripping on the ground at ALL...and the clutch is slipping like crazy! Someone suggests we have a bad rear main seal, however, reading your forums here, one of the mechanics posted he has never seen a pt in the shop for a rear main seal. Any ideas would be appreciated!!!

Since you have a new clutch, and now are losing oil and the clutch is slipping, it is likely the oil is finding its way onto the clutch. It DOES sound like a rear seal.

I agree - that is a LOT. If it was only the rear mail seal you would *have* to be getting a mess of it on the ground. The bellhousing isn't that well sealed, and a) 3 quarts a week would literally fill the bellhousing in a few weeks or b) would be dripping (flowing!!!) onto the ground. Probably b).

How does the car run? As normal, or? I ask because a decent possibility is you have a cooked ring(s), and oil is being drawn into the combustion chamber and burned off, then air/exhaust is pressurizing the crankcase and forcing relatively small amounts of oil out one or both of the crank seals, possibly lubricating the clutch.

Put a piece of cardboard under the engine/transmission and let it sit for a day or two to be sure you're not seeing drips. If you're not, do a compression/leakdown test to be sure you're not dealing with an actual combustion chamber sealing issue.

Okay, two drops the size of a nickle, maybe a quarter is all that's on the ground. I didn't think the bell housing would hold that much oil, but was told it was possible. With clutch slipping haven't driven it for a while, but it isn't smoking there is very small drops on the hatch, like rain, but seems like oil. Mechanic says he can't warranty the clutch if it's oil soaked, so I am looking at another 900 to 1200 for clutch and or seal...ugh.

Sorry, that really sucks!

if you are saying it has FILLED up the bell housing dude that is just bad it would be hard for me to belive that is even doable

IF it does nto smoke its not going into the cylenders
if there is none on the ground its not leaking it while sitting
the last option is a presure leak while running

tyr this

cardboard on drive way start car and run it at a HIGH rev for 5 minutes it wont hurt anything and if it is a presuer leak it should show up

Where physically are the drops on the ground in relation to the car? How long was it sitting to generate this amount of oil?

If you have oil on the hatch, that is getting blown out the exhaust pipe or getting sprayed underneath the car and getting sucked up into the vacuum the hatch creates while you're moving forward.

Dad has solid advice - by 2000 rpm the pump should be making very close to maximum pressure, so leave it in neutral, hold it at 2k for a minute or two, and see what's on the ground. It'd be GREAT to have a helper with a flashlight looking around under the hood and under the car while you're doing this to more quickly spot what's coming out of where. I would be sure the car has a normal/full oil fill before starting, so you have the best possible test.
