Default Rear light question

I don't do it often, I prefer to hand-wash my pt, but sometimes, during heavy rains I just can't stand all that road grime, so I use an automatic car wash (pressure spray)

Problem is, sometimes, water gets into the tail light teardrop and shorts out the bulb.

So, I was wondering, would it be a good idea to run a silicon bead around the inner bevel to seal the housing when the unit is installed? Would that work? Would it make things worse? I just need to seal the lens against outside water, by doing something that isn't permanent so I can change the bulb when it dies a natural death.

This may be the wrong forum to ask, btw.

Water is getting inside of the lens? Inside of between the bulb and housing? or what?

Yes, the high pressure wash forces water between the plastic lens part of the light and the metal frame part of the car and water drips into where the lamp is inserted and shatters the lamp (which is usually hot because I've been driving a while)

Water doesn't get in when it's raining or I drive through a puddle, or when I hand wash, it's only when I use a high pressure wash system.

Take the whole tail light out and see if you have the felt/rubber washer where the bulb holder goes into the hole. If it's there, not broken and making a good seal to keep water out, then yes you have some sort of small crack on the outside lens or around the lens and backing shell and if you can find it, a bead of silicone should seal it up.

There's no felt or rubber washer around the bulb assembly

That could explain it

Yes that could. The washer makes an air-tight seal so no water gets in. Don't know where your going to get them. Check the lights on the other side also.

if the rubber washer isn't there then you shouldn't be about to secure the bulb into place. Does the bulb wobble or fall out of the hole?

it may not be yellow like in the picture but there should be a rubber gasket there like what CREWZIN was talking about.

Advance has them in the "Help!" section of the store. Has random odds and ends... You could also make one.

when i had my stock 06 tail lights, they were doing the same thing ,i pulled the bulb socket out and installed the rubber gasket and that took care of the water getting into the tail lights
