Default Exhaust muffler ground cable

I've been around this forum for a while but have never posted before. Came across my first PT problem that I can't find an answer to by searching the forum.

My PT is UK spec 2005 model 2.4 with no mods. The exhaust back box (muffler) needs replaced. I bought a new stock one today from my local parts store (in the UK the local store is about 1/3 of the price of the chrysler dealer). It doesn't seem to have the small bracket for attaching the ground cable that is on the stock muffler though.

Since there are loads of people here who have changed their exhaust I wondered if this ground is essential and if so how would I attach it to a muffler with no bracket to take the bolt? How have others done it if you have changed from stock?

I don't have the equipment for welding and my nearest exhaust shop didn't have a clue what the ground would be for and said their replacement didn't have the bracket either.

If the car was designed to have the ground strap, I'd do what the engineers decided was the best thing to do.

You might try going to a welding shop and having them weld on the bracket. The cost should not be too dear.

I take it you have had no electrical problems since?

I assume its to compensate for the poor grounding these cars have. Theres a ton of tiny grounding wires throughout the car if you look closely.

With that said, i havent had one for a long time on my 04' when i replaced the full exhaust system. I guess a qucik method would be to use a sheet metal screw directly into the tail pipe to hold the wire. It could be done like the factory on top and unseen.

I have a chrome tailpipe cover on mine. It's held on with two bolts either side. I was thinking of using one of those bolts to hold the ground cable, if it reaches.

Sounds like a good plan. If it doesn't reach, any good ground wire attached securely to the tailpipe and body frame will do.

Thanks for the replies. I assumed that most who have upgraded exhausts would have done away with that ground. Was interested to see if any problems came up because it was taken off. Since im replacing it with stock (or very close to) ill try refitting it.

For radio interference

No one (I hope) is suggesting it's critical ...
