Exclamation '08 AC and overheating issues --- HELP!

OK, so I'm new here. I think I'm posting in the right place. I have an '08 pt cruiser and am having some issues. When I turn the AC on it makes a sound like someone is kicking the floor board and if I sit still for any longer than a couple of seconds it will make this sound like the fan motor isn't working and it will smoke. The smoke is white and has a sweet smell. As soon as I turn the AC off though it stops. I've also just noticed that if I am driving at highway speeds (45 and above) that the temp will stay just below halfway but if I'm at a stoplight the temp will slowly start to climb. I checked all my fluids yesterday and they are all full. I'm thinking the radiator fan isn't working?
I have to drive 2300 miles from Kentucky to Oregon in a month with my 1yr old son. It's all highway driving if I don't hit any traffic. Do you think the car would make it or is this something that needs to be fixed ASAP? I'm pregnant as well so I would be kind of screwed if it decided to breakdown in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for your help in advance!

P.S.
If it is the radiator fan how to I test it/replace it or is it something I'm going to have to go to a shop for?

Sweet smell could be coolant... Chances are the fan isnt working as well. Its something u need to take care of to prevent overheating and possibly warping your heads.

Are you maintaininga proper coolant level or is it decreasing? You may have a leak

It's maintaining the proper level. I checked where I park my car and there's no fluid spot on the ground.

sounds like the high speed portion of the fan is working and the low speed side isn't. That's dangerous either way as once it stops on one side it's likely that eventually the other will quit too. There are universal fan units that are around $30 but I've never tried one and not sure if anyone else has, and there are OEM type fan units that run close to $70, both on ebay. The only one I saw that specifically stated it covered an '08 model was $85.

Friend of mine runs Cruiser Parts Warehouse on Ebay and I've sent him a message to see if he has a used fan that would work, would be much cheaper.

Yup. Open hood, start engine, turn A/C on - you should hear the fan.
