Unhappy Alternator?

I have an 03 GT Cruiser with nearly 90,000 miles. Two days ago when I tried to start it after work it wouldnt start and clicked like the battery was dead. So I had a coworker start it with a battery pack and he said that he thought that it was corrosion on my battery cable that caused a bad connection. So I made it home and cleaned the cable. But since then it has been slow to start and when it does it sounds like it is loosing power and the lights dim. Today when I started it it did the same thing but then dash lights started flickering. This goes on for about five minutes and then it smoothes out. I took it to Autozone and they said that they thought it was the alternator but after looking at this forum I wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas before I spend the $400 to get it changed if its not the problem.

i would get a new battery first. if the battery is bad, the alternator might be working overtime giving the illusion of a bad alternator.

chances are you're gonna have to replace the battery anyway so might as well do it now. you never know.

How old is the battery? Did Autozone check it, too?

If the battery is good, then I'd check the battery cables really well (cut back a little of the insulation near the battery clamp, too).

If you have an Advance Auto near you, they can do a load test on your alternator for free, and also do an individual cell test on your battery. I had similar issues and found out it was once bad cell on my battery. Replaced with new, higher CCA battery and all issues gone.

They tested the battery and said that it had 11 volts I think. I'm so not a car person. The reason that I am questioning it is because I thought that if the alternator went bad then the battery would go dead and that would be it. It seems like after I get going it smoothes out and doesnt flicker. I'll try getting a battery first I think mine is about 3 years old.

If you needed a jump to get started, then the car was fine, it's the battery, not the alternator. If alternator was bad and you got a jump, car would slowly die because battery wasn't getting charged.

Bad earth I would say, had the same with mine. Was good enough to run the car, (mine's a diesel so even fired up the glows) but not good enough to pass the 80 amps or so the starter pulls.

Agree! Put it on the checklist! Bad battery's 'off-gas' and cause lots of corrosion.
Mine was horribly corroded around the battery!!

Listen to Chrome; trouble shooting is best! get a manual (really doesn't
matter for what) and follow steps!
This will save you lots of $ and give you a more reliable cruiser!
