Default Hard Coolant Lines

Has anyone replaced/repaired the hard coolant lines: (1) the water inlet at the back of the water pump and (2) heater lines that wrap around the front and left side of the engine. The ends of all of mine were rusted so I am trying to decide whether to repair of replace them. If I repair them, a wire wheel and some sand paper should remove all of the rust. What should I put on the bare steel to protect it? I don't think regular paint would work here. What about engine enamel? The original finish seems to be powder coating.
