Default Drive Belt (PS/AC) Belt

Hey folks.
Tried to replace my drive belt last night, and the new belt is too short. Double checked with Auto Zone and said it was the belt called (Dayco 560)for, but it's 2" short. Anyone else with this same problem, and more importantly, anyone with a solution?
Thanks again.

what year is your PT? I think somewhere along the line the belts changed...
I looked at AutoZone's web site and they list something different for an '01 compared to an '03

TN,

Make sure the number on the belt is the same on the box!!!

The same thing happened to me and it turned out autozone had the wrong belt in the box!!

Mine is an '02. Took the belt back to AZ just to confirm that the size was correct. The 56" belt will no freakin' way fit. Was concerned that maybe the tension adjustment arm was replaced wrong or in the wrong position, don't know, just grasping at straws

rockauto.com shows 56" belts for '01-'02 and 55" belts for '03+. I put a Gates K040560 on my '01 about a month ago without issue. Maybe you don't have the tensioner compressed all the way? Did you compare the belt that came off with the belt you're trying to put on? How much longer is yours than the new one?

Finally found a Goodyear gator belt 4 rib 57" that fit. Still cannot figure why the std. belt would not fit. The old one measured 57.5". Quad checked the belt routing, the tension pully only has about 2" of travel, have a feeling the problem may well lie there

Is it possible you are routing it wrong? When I first replaced mine I couldn't figure out how to make it fit - it was either slightly too short or quite a bit too long. After checking the manual and seeing the belt routing, it made sense and worked perfectly.

Did you look at the markings on the old belt to see what it was? If it wasn't a 56" perhaps a previous AC or PS repair ended up with a slightly larger pulley. That is very unlikely. More likely is the new 56" is a snug fit and needs the tensioner at the extreme end of its travel. This was the case when I replaced the belt on my 2002 a while ago. The 56" seemed a bit snug but it went on.

Going with a 57" when the application calls for a 56" will give you less life out of the belt. Belts stretch over time. If the old one you replaced was 57.5 inches, your new 57" will only give you 0.5" of stretch before giving the same performance as your old one.

It is also possible that the 56" you got just happened to be at the short end of the manufacturing tolerance. You could compare all of the 56" belts at the store and get the longest one.
