Default Won't start!

Hey guys, great site. First post!

It's actually for my mother. She's got an 01 PT, which she admires very much and babies like you wouldn't beleive.

Today, it wouldn't start. It sounds like the starter solenoid won't properly engage/the starter won't wind up. It mostly clicks in rapid succession. Not being at all familiar with this vehicle, I haven't gone on a trouble shooting spree yet. The car's only got 51,000 Kilometers on it, so I'd think the starter wouldn't be worn out already? I've built dozens of chevy, ford and dodge engines but haven't really toyed with anything this new. I mostly stick to building monster trucks! Not something that I have to jack up to look at.

In any event, I'm looking for people with experience with similar hard start/won't start symptoms that match mine, to lend advice and point me in the right direction.

I (we) appreciate your help,
Chad.

MR4WD, welcome to the forum. The first thing I would check would be the battery, make sure the battery is charged and the terminals are clean and tight.

I load tested the battery, which passed. The terminals are also clean.

So much for the first guess. Sounds like it's the starter/solenoid.

You could try to check with MX-5.

The fast clicking on the starter always indicated to me that the battery doesn't have the power to turn the starter. It might have some for the radio or lights but the starter turning over the flywheel takes more than anything else. Jump start it from another vehicle or charge it up and I think you'll find it will turn over. Why it went below the charge that it needed is what you have to find out. I've heard a lot of 01 PTs needing a new battery (mine not included so far).

I third that opinion.. rapid clicking of the starter sileniod would mean that its getting some juice but not enough to engage the starter itself.. have you tried charging the battery to kick the amps?.. What you have is better that getting nothing at all..
