Default air bag light

The air bag light has been constantly going on and off for over 3 years. Sometimes I wont get anything for months then It lights up constantly. I had initially taken it to the dealer. First I was told they was some garbage under the seat causing the problem. Then it started again. They said they moved some wiring around, still didn't solve the problem. Finally I was told I had a faulty air bag and would need to get it replaced. However the car was out of warranty and decided to just live with the annoyance rather then the cost of replacing the issue, only because I kind of thing they were feeding me a line of crap. Any ideas or has anyone had this problem

Tromis, sounds like a faulty "clockspring" to me. It's a device in the steering column that has something to do with the Air Bag system.

By the way, I got this info from a Chrysler PT mechanic.

Others on here may have more infomation about the clockspring.

The clocksprings do go wonky a bit. Has your driver's side airbag ever been deployed? One thing most PT'ers don't do after an accident is replace the clockspring, even though the instructions state that if the airbag deploys, the clockspring must be replaced.

If they initially were saying it was something under your seat, that makes me think you had a seat airbag code. Try moving around the yellow connector under your seat and see if the light goes off. If it does, you have a problem with the wiring or connector.

Do you know what the code is?

I thought once the airbag light goes on, it can't be shut off unless it is reset via specialized code reader computer (plugged into the car by the service tech).

The airbag light is not like the check engine light. It only comes on when the code is active. The code will go stored and light will turn off as soon as you fix the problem.

no there is no error code, the airbag has never been deployed, I I did make sure the connector was fine under the seat, as I said It is very intermittent, it has come on in about a week , but I will be driving and it may come on and off a few dozen times , then it will be quiet for a while?

I'm sure there is a stored code if your light has been going on and off. If there's no code, why on earth would someone want to replace your airbag?!?!

I would ask the dealer to just tell you what stored code is in there and then you'll have a good direction to go. Just reading the code shouldn't cost that much compared to diagnosing it. Not much else you can do without knowing what part of the system is the problem.

OK, I've been searching for a couple hours here. Lots of airbag light posts but never any with a conclusive end, so I'll resurrect this one. My 2005 PT GT convertible has an intermittent airbag light. It happened a couple months ago, then stopped and just came back.

Two questions:
(1) What is the cheapest way to read the code?
(2) What are the most common culprits?

Other details: My cruise control, horn and power windows work fine and the rest of the car is running well. The seats have an SRS tag on them near the headrest. I bought the car used, but no collisions on the Carfax report and I have not seen any signs of accident repair that might have deployed the airbags. The problem seems more common when there is a body in the passenger seat, especially after a bump in the road. If the light comes on when nobody is in the passenger seat, beating the seat bottom a couple times turns the light off. Of course, doing nothing also turns the light off, so maybe beating the seat just makes me feel better. The light goes on and off while driving, I can tell becasue it bings every time it comes back on. I took the connectors off the passenger seat and cleaned them up a couple months ago which did not immediately fix the problem. However, like I said, the light has been off for awhile until recently too.

Any help is appreciated. I would prefer not to disable the bag although I heard it can be done by using a resistor in the circuit ala the SRT4 forums.
