Default Changing tranny fluid

Just looking to change the tranny fluid (automatic), and the filter. I have just over 30,000 miles, and from what I know, it takes 5 quarts of ATF+4, and up to 9 quarts if you do the torque converter.
Is it necessary to to the converter?
Also, I saw the transmission has to "learn" after the fluid has been changed.
Is that fact or fiction?
I thought that if the battery connections were removed during the process, it would assume all was the same as before the change?
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks

well thsi has been covered andcovered and covered again but thats ok here is MY take
yes the pan holds som,e ware areound 5 quarts
it does have to be ATF V anything else is a no no

to drop the pan change the filter you will get out about 50%
to have a machine suck it all out is around $140
the relearn thing is a hit and miss I have changed mine 3 times and never had to do the relearn
some have done it once and they did, I really dont know how and what causes it to do wjhat it does
the way I did mine was to drop the pan change the filter then in a couple momths I did it again and then in 6 months i did it again I am pretty sure there may still be some old fluid left but most likely not enought to hurt
If you leave the pan off for like a week it will take almost 6 quarts
I would not sugest any additive

ok thats my take on this its not that hard and the ATF+$ is like $450 a quart
the filter is around $25 usally you can chose the rubber/metal gasket or a cork one

I never used any sealer on mine

We went a long way from changing the fluid to a price war. I am paying $11.25 a liter, so we can put that one to bed!
Thanks
