Default 3 CEL Codes..

Hey guys,

I'm new here, in fact this is my first post. My girlfriend has a 2005 PT Cruiser (Non-Turbo). It is a convertible, but I don't think that matters.

Anyways, ever since she bought the car, there has been a check engine light that comes on intermittently. I haven't figured out any sort of pattern to it coming on or going away. Sometimes it is there, others it is not.

I got around to reading the codes today with my friends ODBII scanner (I didn't know about the 3 key trick..)

P0171
P0172
P0138

I understand what they mean individually, but I think it is a bit off that they are coming on together. My best guess is that the O2 Sensor is bad (Back one)

Any feedback? I have no experience working on these cars, so I am not really sure of the common issues/problems/whatnot.

I did try to search the forums before posting, by the way.

Thanks

Odd that you get both 171 and 172 at the same time, considering 171 is "system too lean" and 172 is "system too rich". However, combine that with 138 and I agree, O2 sensor malfunction. Reads as bank 1, not sure if that's the upstream or downstream sensor.

P0138 HO2S Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2

I was once told that the 02 sensor codes are generic and to disregard the message about the "Bank" because the PT Cruiser doesn't have a choice between "banks' and only read the Sensor 1 or 2 and there was a debate about which one was which. Doesn't take long or a lot of $$ to change both and if one has gone bad, you can bet the other isn't far behind.

According to a Google search, sensor 2 is Post CAT

I just read on a performance forum that if one fails the other is likely to fail shortly after, and they also suggest replacing both.
