Default Air conditiong question

I was driving down the freeway in my 2004 2.4 turbo (30k miles) with nice cold A/C when all of a sudden I get a low whistle noise from behind the dash and just like that, my A/C goes hot. The doors/ ducts all seem to be working ok, and the engine temp is normal, and the A/C is charged. WTF? I'm planning a long road trip next week, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Check low speed fan is working when AC is on. If not it could either be your fan's gone, or the low pressure switch, or there's a leak in the system causing loss of gas.

If you have enough gas in the system, and jumping the low pressure switch turns on the compressor and fan, then its your switch. However, jumping the switch will also turn on the compressor and fan if you don't have enough gas in the system.

As for the fan, connect it directly to the battery to see if it comes on.

Nope. The computer shuts the fan completely off at around 35mph. Enough air flow through the radiator at that speed is all that's needed to keep everything cool .....if everything else is working properly (ie: radiator isn't blocked up, water pump is working, thermostat is working etc.)

You say the A.C is charged - have you had it tested afterwards? I suspect you lost the refrigerant.

OK. I didn't have time to check the switch today, so I dropped the car off at the local garage. They found a MINOR leak in one hose and said I also needed a new compre$$or. Are they trying to $crew me? Should I still check the switch? When I get the system recharged, it lasts about a year. It was last charged 2 months ago.
