Default Argh another reason to hate mechanics

Not that I'm against the profession, I don't *really* hate them but maybe dislike shoddy work. Seriously am still finding stuff that the mech taht did my wifes 2001 timing belt almost 2 years back.

Pencil strut connecting lower torque strut to frame is missing....... I can't believe I'm just now realizing this.

Other things done by this fellow:

1. wood screw used to secure spalshguard to bumper
2. stripped/siezed oil drain bolt when using impact wrench on bolt.
3. missing fastener in timing belt cover
4. belt installed with "Engine ->" pointing to the outside of the car - away from the engine.
5. missing engine mount star bolt cover
6. missing timing belt inspection port cover
7. destroyed the original plenum removing it - so installed the plastic version (score!)
8. broke a piece of glass wife had in the car (a girly thing, but still)

This is why you take your car to a Chrysler mechanic for a job like that, and not some corner garage shop.

I doubt Chrysler's any better, but certainly more expensive.

Right now, I strip cars for a living.
manual Neons have all the bracing missing, the shops just leave it off when doing a clutch.

My friend worked for Pontiac / GMC dealer. You'd be amazed at the shortcuts they took- You think I'm a hack ...

That PT I had was PERFECT before I sold it, I'm not the only guy that
thinks like this. You need to find a neighborhood guy that's good and
honest, just like for any other service. They do exist.

Local vet wanted $600 to remove two tumors they said were cancerous.
Found another place that did it for $153, AND were super kuhl.
They tested it and said it WASN'T cancer. (and they clipped the beast's
claws 4 free!)

Thats why i do all my own work or the few times i go somehwere i watch them the entire time. Some don't like it but i dont care as i have seen stupid stuff then theylie and say it was like that when it came in.....etc..

Like the time i had my front end aligned the guy stuck the lugnut inside the impact socket and started to cram it onto the stud to tighten it. I stopped him and asked if he was good enough to see the threads through the socket so he wouldnt cross thread them

Yeah its usually me who does all the work on both my cars, but since I lack a garage or even a driveway sometimes I just gotta bite the bullet. Dad's got a full garage of air tools and auto stuff but thats 200 miles away. Thats where I did my own timing belt about 8 months after this travesty. He's been fixing cars since the late 60's but he told me he will never ever do anything on that side of my motor again. He would only sit and drink while he watched me struggle LOL.

I had my old car (Volvo 850) in to the shop for some AC work. Got it back missing several Dash bolts but didn't realize it for several months when suddenly the dash came loose on the passenger side!

That is a product of crappy work-ethic!

Any dealer or independent can have a variety of different mechanics working there. If you're happy with a job you had done, ask for their name and request them every time you go.

Bob, take the guy to small claims court for the shoddy work. Even though time has passed, you might still win the case.

And, yes, the dealer my screw up, too. But that bad? That dealer would not be in business very long. Word gets around ....

When my timing belt needs replacing, I'll take it to my dealer. Then I will check his work, the moment I get the car home. I do this, anyway.

Trust no one ... except Mel Brooks!
