Default Gauge

Ok,I had a water pump and thermostate put on my car by somebody a friend recommended but now the gauge inside my car that reads cold ,hot isn't working.Staying below cold instead of being where it should(middle). Is there a wire that he could have forgot to connect back up under the hood or somrthing. Please help as I'm still uncertain if cars ok.Seems to be but it was running hot when I took it to the man and for awhile I was adding water and still driving it.,(i KNOW BUT i'M A FEMALE) and I know I'm lucky,NOW.

YES, there's the ETC (Engine Coolant Temperature) Sensor that has an electrical connection. He probably forgot to re-attach it. It;s right by the thermostat.
