Default Possible Alternator Trouble

I have a 2001 Cruiser that recently lost power while on the freeway. Symptoms include:

1. Getting stuck in gear while at speed (think it was 2nd)
2. Once the car was stuck in gear, all dash lights came on
3. Pulled over to turn the car off. After sitting for a few minutes, the car turned over and ran briefly.
4. The above happened again. Turned off the vehicle hoping to reset everything. The dash controls came on for a few seconds, then turned off.
5. Upon using a battery charger to jump the battery, it would hold a charge for a very short time and then die again.

There wasn't enough charge to run the radio or clock either. I eventually lost all dash/radio lights.

The AAA guy that helped me said that his equipment indicated that it was an alternator problem. Another mechanic said it would be the transmission.

I'm not sure what to do about this. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem would be before I spend a bunch of money trying to get it fixed?

Does the car need full voltage to run/shift/for fuel pressure, etc?

If you are anywhere near an auto parts store, at least I know Advance Auto and AutoZone both do this, they can test your battery and alternator for free. Fastest way to find out. Need to make sure whomever tests you alternator does so with the proper load test equipment.
