Default cam sensor issue

I purchased a 2001 PT Cruiser with a burnt motor, it had holes through the pistons.
I purchased a refurbished head and had the block bored out 20 over and installed new pistons.
The motor will not start with the cam sensor connected. It starts and runs fine when disconnected, after cranking on it for 3-4 seconds.
I swapped the cam sensor with another PT Cruiser, no change and the other Cruiser starts fine. Disconnect the cam sensor on the other Cruiser, it will not start. Rechecked the timing, everything looks good.
I have been driving the Cruiser for a month now with the sensor disconnected. Good pickup, idles good and the gas mileage is about the same in town. The only thing wrong is that it takes 3-4 seconds of cranking to get it started, even if warm.
Is the cam sensor just used in starting or does it have other functions when the motor is running?

Default Re: cam sensor issue

Your PCM resorts to 'batch fire' for injectors.

Your cam timing is off.

Sequential has NO effect on performance or efficiency, it's for low-speed emissions and, perhaps, idle quality.

Some years would run w/o cam sensors, others wouldn't.
I have no idea on PT's, and it's with interest I read this!
