Default How to tell which front wheel bearing is bad?

Can you guys tell me how to figure out which front wheel bearing is bad by the way the steering wheel is turned? I've got a pretty loud humming coming from the front end when traveling in a straight line. When I turn the steering wheel to the left it almost disappears. It sounds to me like the noise is coming from the pasenger's side, but I can't be sure.

Also, in looking for replacement wheel bearings, there are the 1st design (33mm width) and 2nd design (39mm width). The first design is supposed to be for up to 2002, and the 2nd design is post- 2002. Were there any exceptions to that, or can I count on that differentation when I go to buy replacement bearings?

Thanks,
Steve

Some 2002 models have the first design, some don't. If you have an '02, you won't really know which design you have until you take the original off. It sounds to me like it's your passenger side. You can always jack up the front, and grab the tire with both hands. Mine was obviously loose, and would wiggle back and forth.

you grab teh wheel at the top and bottom and wiggle it that way if you do it side to side you might feel the steering components instead of the wheel bearing.

if your going to replace one wheel bearing its good preventiative mainteance to go ahead and replace both wheel bearings.

I'm currntly saving up the money to do my front wheel bearings.

genuly a sign is a humming while going straight and stopping when turning due to sideloading of the bearing.

It's a real hummer, alright. I knew about the loading issues when turning, I just couldn't remember if turning left meant the passenger side bearing was the one being loaded or if it was vice-versa. I'm dropping it off at the shop on Tuesday night so they can have at it. I really want to replace both sides at the same time, but unfortunately with Christmas upon us, and my montlhly medical bills, I'm just going to have them do the one that's making the most noise.

I'll have to wait until after Christmas to budget in the other side. Hopefully they won't have to destroy the old bearing to get it out. I'd really like to see how it looks/feels, since I've never had a vehicle with pressed in front wheel bearings before. I've always had Chevy's with the tapered front roller bearings.

Is a front end alignment necessary after doing this job?

Why would you need an alignment after a bearing change? I never did that

Sure, but IMO is not totally necessary because you are not touching the tie rods.

I have heard thats it also good preventitive mainteance to get an alignment close to once a year.
just due to the increible stresses a vehilces tires/wheels/suspencion/steering components go through on a day to day basis

I'm usually good with most preventative mainteance but IO have yet to get into this habit.....would be nice if it was something easily do able at home.
