Unhappy 2004 Cruiser EGR valve?

My 2004 PT Cruiser has a knock when I accelerate and when I go up hills. My Chilton manual is for up to 2003 Cruisers. It says the problem may be a faulty EGR valve. There is no connection to my manifold and I can not find the valve on the car. Does the 2004 have an EGR valve? If not what are some of the simpler things I can look for? The plugs and wires have been replaced. HELP!!

Thanks, Russ

Your 2004 doesn't have an EGR valve. Only on the first couple of years on the cruiser. What gap are you using on the plugs. Chrysler cam out after a couple of years and told the mechanics to make sure all plugs on the Non-turbo PT's are to be gapped at .040in. At first they were using .050in.

Usually a knock is cause by per-ignition and there's a couple reasons for that but I'd check the gap and lower it to see if that helps. If not, you might have a timing problem. If your anywhere near 100,000 miles, the timing belt could be your problem.

Thanks very much. If I'm not mistaken I think I gapped the plugs to .040 but I'll double check. Is it possible my knock sensor is bad. If so will it set off the check engine light?

Thanks again, Russ

Yep, that's always a possibility. But it should set off one of these codes:

P0324 Knock Sensor (KS) Module Performance
P0325 PCM Knock Sensor Circuit
P0326 Knock Sensor CKT Excessive Spark Retard
P0327 Knock Sensor Circuit Low Voltage
P0328 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High Input (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
P0329 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
P0330 Knock Sensor (KS) Circuit Bank 2
P0331 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 2)
P0332 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2)
P0333 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit High Input (Bank 2)
P0334 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Intermittent (Bank 2)
