Default My "Rattle" is busted!

This may not qualify as a "Technical" issue, but when you've had a rattle in the back of your PT--a rattle that's been going on for a good four years, now ... a rattle that only occurs when stopping or turning, then I'd call it technical enough.

About a year ago, I asked if any Cruisers had a rattle in the back (interior) of their cars. No one seemed to have the problem, although quite a few posters sought to help out with their best guesses. Well, today I found out what has been making that "RATTLE" when I turn or stop.

Some of us have three hight-mounted stop lamps in our third brake light. My wife recently asked me to change "the bulb", since someone told her the upper brake lamp was not working when she put on her brakes.

I gently pulled off the plastic shrouding piece, pushed in the two tabs on either side of the upper brake lens, removed the lense and discovered that "the bulb" was actually three bulbs. Two were black, and one was a cloudy while and had popped its cork, so to speak. That is, the third bulb had popped its bulb--while leaving the connecting portion of the lamp, still stuck in the socket.

I had to fish around a moment to get the little bulb out--and I distinctly heard a familiar, haunting sound: The Rattle!

Aha! I fished the bulb out, pinched the neck of the broken bulb that was still in the socket, and pulled the neck free.

After I replaced the three bulbs and put everything back together, I took a little drive. The "rattle" was gone.

Now this may seem like a trivial issue to some, but when you get in your PT and it thumps or rattles, squeaks or whines--makes any noise, other that Va-room, then the word technical becomes a relative term, subject to interpretation.

So, if you do, in fact, have a rattle of your own--somewhere in the way back of your PT, make sure you check your upper (middle) brake lamps--when all else fails. Sometimes those lamps turn into something akin to lost marbles.

Merry Christmas, Cruisers!

Tim
