Default sputtering '01

I have a '01 PT Limited Edition with just over 100,000 miles on it. Latetly it has started to sputter when backing up, idling in the drive or when stopped at a light. It will smooth out as soon as I give it some gas and seems to drive fine otherwise. Engine light does not come on and no codes are thrown when I do the key dance. Any ideas as to what could be causing this sputter? Thanks for any help.

it just may need a simple tune up. as others may state if you have the factory plugs get rid of them.

Start with the basics. When was the last time both plugs and wires were changed?

We bought the car used, so no idea when the last time anything was changed. All we have done is oil change and tranny flush. Also replaced the power steering pressure sensor. I'll have my husband check the plugs and wires and go from there. Thanks for your suggestions and I'll be back if we don't get this figured out

The stock plugs and wires aren't the best. If you are not sure if they have been changed I'd do so anyway for peace of mind.

And you know about timing belt, idlers, tensioner and water pump replacement at that mileage???

As these guys have said, and there's a idle servo (AIS ?) that sometimes needs to be cleaned

Well, the car ran like crapola today and finally threw a code at us. P301. Got new plugs and wires, hubby is changing them now. Fingers crossed this does the trick.

P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

Points towards plug, wire or coil, i would check in that order. Good you are changing plugs and wires.

Ok, found a wire that got disconnected from the sensor when changing plugs. Drove it around the block, seems fine now.
