Default rack and pinion replacement

Does the steering wheel need to removed to get the rack and pinion out? I have a hayes manual and it's calling for the steering wheel removal. I have a garage manual that doesn't state anything about steering wheel removal. Also, does the roll pin get removed when the cross member is lowered or from in the car? Other then that it looks pretty straight forward.

Is your rack and pinion leaking?

indeed it is sir....I put sealer in it a few weeks ago and had to do it again yesterday. I feel I am on barrowed time untill it needs to replaced. I got a replacement Rack and Pinion yesterday and have a nice heated garage to do it in. I already did the lower control arms, ball joints, bushings, sway bar and connecting rods. I guessing it's a good time to do the tie rod ends.

This is for Neon:

There's a really funky nut to disconnect the stub from the steer column, there's the roll pin to remove that same stub from the rack.

Here's what a Neon (manual, this is rare boys!) stub looks like:

There's no reason to loosen the steering column on the Neon, nonetheless, it isn't difficult (on Neon) just wrap steering wheel tight to steering column with duct tape so it can't turn!!!!
