Default Pt just died, acting like timing belt, 40,000.

Just got off freeway hit stop light. In first gear went to take off went and started cluncking. Sounded like a loud exhaust leak from engine. I turned it off pushed it to the nearest parking spot luckily. My buddy came down he hears it backfiring in the valves we shut it down quickly. He thinks might be timing and after looking into a bit maybe cam sensor. Only got 41,000 its a 2005 basic model. 10 hr job i hear for timing belt at 80 to 100.00 ouch. Anyone have any ideas where to start. Thanks for any input. Came down to work after long day as i dont have internet at home so i'll hopefully have some suggestions. Oh and i did just replace my battery, just watched a video of where cam sensor is so maybe i tweeked some wires. Thanks again.

Pull that top timing cover off, find TDC on #1, and see if gears are aligned.

Did the engine light come on to show a fault code has been stored in the computer?

...and P.S. It's not 80 to 100.00 ouch. It's $800.00 to $1200.00 ouch, ouch!

No codes says donE, must mean my car is done/over lol. Yeah 10 hrs at 80-100 dollars would be 800.00 to 1000.00. SUCKS. I'll try taking off the timing cover and checking it, no time to do so for a while.

We popped the hood again and fired it up. Found a loose spark plug under manifold cover. Looks like a good time to change sparks and plugs. What a relief.

Whew! I'm glad it was a loose spark plug. I don't like to hear about a timing belt needed at 40,000! That's scary.
