Default Which bulb for instrument cluster?

PT Cruiser 2001 (Red)

I found directions on this site to replace the lights in the instrument cluster (our mechanics said, "That's probably a lot of work and it's hard").

I figured I'd order the lights before I took the dash apart (planning!).

But when I Google "2001 PT Cruiser Instrument Panel Light," I find light bulbs costing $11 for two (!).

2001-2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser Instrument Cluster Bulb GE Lighting 37/BP2 - Instrument Cluster Bulb - GE Lighting

But NickAtNite, in his/her excellent procedure on how to replace the lights, says that I can use #74 light bulbs, which seem to go for about seven bucks for ten.

Amazon page for 74 lighting bulbs.

Do I have to use the Official Light Bulbs Made From Gold, or can I just use the cheap-o's? I do not want to do this twice. My idea of maintenance is to change the air freshener.

Thanks much!

Get the bulk pack. replace all at the same time. Probably never need to do it again.

@Busted_PT: Thanks for the advice. I'll go with the boring, cheap ones.

As for doing it again, well, we're up to 150,000 miles and it still keeps chugging along, so who knows?

Hope you have it as long as it's making you happy. They are a pretty cool ride.

don't know where you're located but if the emissions station doesn't see the cel when turning the ignition to "on", they will fail you.

If you'll check your owners manual you'll find all the bulbs for the PT listed inside. The 74s are correct according to Chrysler.

Haven't done it yet. I don't have access to a garage, so I have to wait for a nice, non-rainy day. (I figure it's enough of a pain to be messing with the dash without also getting rained on.)

Unfortunately, I live near Seattle and it's been raining (and cold) pretty much every day for the last three months. Maybe it'll dry out by June!

Glad to hear you've made it to 236K miles. I notice on "Car Talk" that whenever somebody calls in with a car that has over 140,000 miles, they always start talking about "the heap you're driving" which makes me very nervous..

As a former Technical Writer, the last place I look for information is the manual.

Thanks for the info (and the picture). Good to know I won't have to sell a kidney to be able to see how fast I'm going!
