Default Poor Mileage

I have an 03, 79k, 5 speed 2.4, no turbo. I now travel between Indiana and Tenn, (new Grand child) but the best I can get is about 28 mpg. Is cold air induction the way to go or is there some other miraculous way to improve mpg?

Unfortunately, and I think others will agree, thats about as good as it gets. Apart from chopping off half the car and gutting it out there is not much you can do to significantly improve mpg. 28 is about right I would say compared to mine at least.

Car has the aerodynamics of a brick, weighs a ton and mpg was never one of it's selling points.

CAI won't affect it that much I wouldn't think.

Perhaps someone else will come along and prove me wrong though. If they do I'll be taking their ideas!

Yes! Wow!
Automatics (look at everyone's signature most have 'fuelly') is about 23 MAX!

The car is also really heavy- It's half 'truck'

I'm with the others here. Mine is an auto and I'm getting about 23 MPG. I wish mine was getting 28.

28mpg is about right with a 5 speed. Mine does about the same on road trips. I have a Volant intake and Borla exhaust. Both were put on in the first few months of buying the PT back in '01. I don't think either made any difference in mpg but it does sound much better...

Capacity is so high on airbox/exhaust only a severe restriction would make any difference at part throttle

Yes this is as good as its gets. Could get a second car a Buick lesabre with a 3800 v6 and you get in the mid 30s on a trip. But not near as fun to drive.
