Default P0303 engine code

I have a 2003 PT Cruiser with a 5 sp non turbo engine with 70k miles. The check engine light came on a few days ago and when checking it out, the shop said it was a cylinder 3 misfire. The plug wires have 70k miles on them and I have platinum plugs with about 25k on them. Should I replace the wires and if so, what wires should I get?

definitely change the wires. go with anything other than oem stock wires. i personally went with bosch.

i'm not saying that will fix your problem, but it won't hurt. it's pretty well known around here that stock wires are garbage.

as far as the plugs, make sure they're gapped at .40.

Yes, you should start with new wires and plugs. Set the gap of the plug to .040in and almost any new wire set will do except the stock wires from Chrysler. Use dielectric grease on the wire ends and anti-seize on the plug threads.

Keep in mind that there are other causes for a mis-fire but changing plugs and wires eliminates that part and it never hurts (with the mileage you have) to have new ignition parts.

A small vacuum leak on the upper manifold, or something internal could also cause the cylinder mis-fire.

It's odd, but when I changed my plugs and wires a while back, I just left the new (stock) Champion's plug gap at the pre-gapped .048. I got the improved idle I was hoping for, and the car has run very well since.

I have been told that setting the plugs to .040 was nesessary for people who lived in cold climates, so maybe that's why I have had no problems (I live in a warmer climate than most PT owners, apparently).

We have the same issue of the P0303 code with our 2005 PT Cruiser. We changed out the plugs and wires, replaced the fuel injector and we thought we figured out the problem when we replaced the ignition coil but a couple days later the rough idle came back and the engine light came back on. Now when we sit idle at a stop light or anywhere the light flashes and when we start driving it'll stop flashing and stay lit. When we do get the code cleared it will come back on again after a day or two. We saw on another thread to try the Mopar Combustion Cleaner, would that work? Any more suggestions we could try that we havent already?

You can try the WD-40 trick of spraying the upper and lower manifold while the engine is running and see if there's a change in idle. You could also do a compression check to see if the problem is internal. Check all the vacuum lines carefully to see if there's any cracks or leaks too.
