Default clutch?

so, yesterday i was on a hill in rush hour traffic, stop and go, i shifted my 2001, manual into 1st and... nothing but a whirring sound.
no 1st gear, no reverse, no gears at all.
if this happened on my Vespa i would assume i'd broken a clutch cable, what do you guys think? is there even a clutch cable?

just spoke to mechanic, he thinks it's the clutch plate and says $800-$100 to fix.

You might check there isn't a broken axle.

You could see if there's a shop that'd do it for less, or if you have some buddies.

nearly 100% of the time pro shops will leave 'optional' parts off to save time,
so someone honest with with a strong back is far better than a tech trying to beat flat-rate

Do you know which model tranny you have? I've got the G288 Getrag tranny on my PT GT, and just got it back from having a wonderful LUK Stage 2 performance clutch installed. It's taking some getting used to, but dang it is hot!

The clutch for both the T350 and the G288 are a complete kit - you can't pull the plate separate, you have to replace the entire clutch assembly. Also, if they tell you they are going to turn down or polish your flywheel, they are also lying to you. If you clutch is gone, you need to make sure the kit includes the flywheel. As to price, $800 is really on the low end. You can buy a factory clutch kit for between $380 and $600, depending on the type. Add to it, around $500 for the install. That's assuming you have no other issues. The clutch on the PT's is hydraulic so you're not going to have a clutch cable issue.

Anyway, I just got mine back and I can tell you that the LUK clutch is what you're going to want if you're running the G288 tranny. The OEM clutch is just too sloppy and weak.

Where did you get the Luk kit and who did the install?

Is it the same as the factory kit or are there some other things you have to do to get it to work?

The hydraulic system is the same, as is the TOB, but the clutch kit and flywheel are different. It was done at Lake Norman CJD, the dealership where I bought the car. Friend of mine owns the dealership so he gives me a huge discount. The stock LUK clutch kit is $470, it is similar to the factory clutch but is higher rated in hp and torque. It's also, in my opinion, a much better clutch. The Stage 2 clutch I purchased is the same type clutch kit as used on the Mercedes SLK. It is significantly different than the factory PT clutch.

Whatever you get, make sure it comes as a complete kit, including TOB, hydraulics and flywheel!
