Question 2004 Dangerous Acceleration Problems/ Possible Transmission?

Hey all, I'm new to this so of I'm not
posting correctly I apologize. I just joined. I bought
my 2004 PT in 2007 with 15k miles. It now has 105k and has given me nothing but problems. Right now I have about 6 issues with it but
I'll only mention one in this thread. Oh, and it
is a 2.4L Turbo / Touring.

My car is having an intense acceleration issue. As soon as I turn it on, whether to go in drive or reverse, it revs like crazy until it finally "kicks/jerks" into gear. When in drive, it will do this everytime it changes gears... but
only for the first 10-15 minutes I drive it (and randomly other times.) It's causing my MPG to be horrible as well as the stress on the car itself. Sometimes when I stop it will kick out of gear completely, which can be dangerous if I'm stopped on a hill because I roll backwards until it kicks back into gear by me revving it. It's quite scary. Also, every now
and then when I first start going it
will only get up to 40ish MPH and will be at around 4k rpm. It's like it won't go into a higher gear. I'll turn my car off and back on and it'll do better.
What's odd is that it did this last winter but not as bad as now. Throughout Spring/Summer/Fall I didn't have this problem. It started again this winter. Except now it's worse than ever.
PLEASE HELP! :-)

Several issues this can be:

Check the cable connections on top of the engine where the throttle cable cover is. There is a large spring on the rotor there, that's intended to pull back when you release the gas pedal. Sometimes it can get gooped up and stick, or the spring itself can be busted. Notice this area in the red circle of the photo.

Also, check your carpeting and areas around your gas pedal! Could be catching on something.

If you don't see any issues in either of these places, you need to do the key dance and see if you are throwing any codes. The programming of your ECU controls the throttle response, except for that portion that winds around the spring rotor on top of the engine. If you don't see any issues then I'd say you may have a problem with the ECU, however if you're not catching any codes, maybe not.

Just my thoughts, I'll go back through a ton of notes I have to see if I've ever documented this from anyone else.

I'm not sure I understand the problem, nor that I could help you even if I did.

Is it that you have to rev the engine to get the transmission to engage, and/or that the engine is revving out of control, and transmission is having engagement issues?

Restarting 'resets' the transmission?

I have to push down on the gas pedal, causing it to rev, for the engine to engage. It's just not switching gears properly. It's like they're sticking. Sometimes it'll go out of gear completely, but to get it to engage or to change gears when accelerating, I have to rev it pretty hard. It kicks/jerks hard and can get pretty noisy.

Oh, had me confused there. Okay, so you have an auto tranny then? Sounds to me like the solenoid has gone out on it.

I guess so. After I restart it I still have to rev and have it kick into gear, but it'll get above 40mph without such high RPM.

Had a similar issue with my 03 n/a it got so bad the tranny wouldn't engage at all just sit there and Rev was all I could do so I had the tranny rebuilt and bam good as new so long story short my guess is your tranny is going and you should have it checked out hope I'm pointing you in the right direction good luck bud

I'd have the automatic trans soleniod checked before getting a complete rebuild. You can get a Borg Warner from RockAuto for cheap, and cruisers on this forum have installed them and they work well.

This solenoid is on top of the automatic trans, under the battery tray.

Good luck,

Tim
