Exclamation Smoke out of Exhaust but not over-heating?

Hi! New to the forum, but have been reading the postings for a few weeks.

I bought a 2003 PT GT Turbo automatic about a month ago. 55,000 mile, clean carfax, running fine. Two weeks ago, check engine light came on putting up CEL's 1188 and 0420. Before I took it to dealership, got the oil changed and noticed oil in my air box and filter.

Went to dealership, they changed out my PCV and an intake sensor, also told me my CAT was failing. They wanted to charge me $1,700 for the cat so I declined knowing I could get an aftermarket installed for $200-$300. Drove from Orlando to Fort Myers today and 2 hours into my trip at about 80 MPH noticed I had smoke coming out my exhaust...Immediately pulled over.

Opened the hood, removed dipstick and had smoke coming from dipstick pipe. Waited til smoke disipated, started up again, more smoke. Waited a bit longer, started up again, some smoke but since the temp gauge had never gone past halfway, and the engine was running strong figured I'd limp it a mile to the next exit. No smoke whatsoever after driving it that mile, no loss of power, drove at 55 for the next 20 miles with no more smoke, no raise of temp gauge, and no other problems.

Got to the hotel, checked the oil...no "sludge" seems normal, do have oil again in the air filter and air box, and no smoke still. Worried about driving it back to Orlando Sunday. Wanted to get some opinions/advice before I take it to the dealership here tomorrow morn. Is there anyway a BAD cat would cause this? Or is it more than likely that whatever this is, is what caused the cat to fail?

I'm still only getting the 1188 and 0420 code.

Thanks for your time.
