baz,

Your new here so I'll pass on some info that you would know if you read the forums before posting. For the kind of question you have, we need more information about your PT. You didn't fill in your profile but reading that you have a 2 Ltr means that your somewhere overseas and not in the U.S. We don't have that engine here, only the 2.4 Ltr engine came to the U.S., so we need to know if it's a gasoline or diesel engine. Also the mileage. If it's a high mileage engine, no matter what it is, shouldn't be flushed. Without going into detail, flushing a high mileage engine will bring more problems than what your trying to clean up. That's what I was told by expert mechanics.

If you are overseas (say England) where it's damp most of the time, your problem could be arcing of the wires. Some England owners had the problem of ticking when they first started up and it's turned out to be moisture from sitting outside. If you can, start the car in the dark and open the hood. You'll be able to see (hopefully) any arcing (sparking) that would cause a ticking sound. As the moisture dries up, the ticking goes away.

Just a thought.

2.0 DOHC is the same as the 2.4 in all important aspects-
Except they carried over the hydraulic cam belt tensioner.
I'd agree with Crewzin' that there's no need to flush an engine- Motor oil does
an excellent job, and really, it matters not if there's sludge up to the cams-
If you continue to change oil on recommended intervals, it'll just sit there.

There was a 'TSB' on ticking due to cam caps- they need to be removed and
slightly chamfered. You could search for this.

Some 2.0's DOHC's also had piston knock. It doesn't hurt anything, and goes
away after less than a minute. They (IIRC) ran larger clearances than SOHC's
and 2.4's as they were only used as the high performance engine for the
Neon- and for some reason the pt ...

baz,

Look again at mine and UptownSport's response to your question. We both talked about flushing the engine.

I agree whith the other two guys, don't flush, some flushes are harsh on the bearings. This is what I do for any noise people have in there older engines, Add 1/2 bottle of "SEA FOAM" to the oil about 500 miles before your next oil change. Add the other half to the gas tank, you will be surprised what it cures. My granddaughter bought a 190k mile SunBird(Pontiac) and when it started in the AM you would swear the lifters were going to come through the covers, added 1/2 can SEA FOAM to the oil and the noise was gone within two days, changed oil/ filter and she was good to go.
