IRPT recently provided me with this useful information on the subject:

"Disconnecting the negative battery cable is a means to reset the PCM, kind
of like rebooting your computer. When you do this the PCM will go through a
short re-learning process to determine fuel and shift points. Some only do
it for 5 minutes, others suggest 30 min. I've also read where some
disconnect the cable and turn the ignition key to start position and hold it
there for 15-20 seconds. I guess the idea is to drain any residue current
in order to ensure that the PCM gets a good reset.

From what I've read this is more important if you change items such as
throttle body, headers, ignition system. Items such as plug wires, spark
plugs muffler and air filter don't really require this, the PCM will
gradually re-learn as you drive anyway. This type of re-learning could take
up to 200 miles, by disconnecting the neg. battery cable you shorten the
re-learn process time.

You really can't hurt anything by disconnecting the neg. battery cable, in
fact, for just about any repair you do the service manual recommends
disconnecting the neg. battery cable. You may lose your radio/clock
settings but nothing any more serious than that."

Thanks, IRPT.
