What this means is the car is detecting a leak in the fuel system. Not a leak of liquid fuel, rather a leak in the airspace or gas fumes section of the fuel system.

This type of failure often turns out to be a bad gas cap. Sometimes there can be a rust spot on the fuel tank or filler neck or another leak elsewhere in the fuel vapor system.

My recommendation is to get a new fuel cap and drive the car. If the leak is fixed, the engine light will go off on its own after a few days.

After a new fuel cap, if the light does not go off on its own after a week of driving the car everyday, you will need an emissions mechanic or smog shop to pressure test the fuel vapor system with a smoke machine to find the leak. Often the smoke machine reveals a split rubber hose somewhere in the evap system or a rusted out fuel filler neck.
