Unhappy 02 PT Cruiser Overheating

I have just changed the radiator cause it had a leak. The water pump, thermostat, and fan relay is new. I checked the fan by taking the connector apart and using jumpers and it works. When it started getting hot, the fan never kicked on. Is there another way to check it? The gauge raises like normal then the reservoir starts bubbling. I'm at my wits end.

i'm thinking you might have air in the coolant system. after doing the radiator change and filling up with HOAT antifreeze, did you bleed the system?

just a thought.

I did the same stuff you did only to find a blown head gasket. It was causing my coolant to boil in the overflow tank. the car drove fine around town never got hot except after a freeway drive when you got off to stop and go traffic. Overflow would boil. Fan would also work erratically i think that has to do with boiling coolant it fools the temp sensors. Are you losing coolant ? Have fans come on at all ?

Fan isn't coming on but does work. Head gasket was recently changed.

i just replaced a warped head due to overheating. and when i got it all back together it overheated cause fan did kick in. at wits end i added a/c refrigerant and it kicks in when turn on a/c. my concern is the fan kicking in when at half mark. so far i think it is working. it doesn't overheat now. just a thought. maybe add a/c refrigerant. i did replace the temp sensor too.

The fans have two speeds, one that turns on when the AC is on, and the other speed turns on when the temp gauge gets half way. If you checked both speeds when the fan was hard-wired, and they both worked, then I'd check to see if it's working while in the vehicle.

With the car cold, turn it on and turn on the AC. The fan should turn on. Then turn the AC off, and the fan should turn off. Wait until the temp gauge gets halfway between C and H and the fan should turn on again. If either of these isn't happening, and you know it's not the fan, then it could be one of the fan relays.

most cars with electric fans have a sensor on the radiator or lower hose that turns on the fans, these cars fans are turned on by the ecu. maybe the low speed is bad ?
