Default What is Normal temperature?

Given all the talk about cooling issues & overheating, I take it that these PT cooling systems are a little touchy. What is normal temp on the gauge? This one runs right at 50% without the fan, 80 degree day, "normal" traffic. It's the wife's car and she never looks at the gauge. I don't drive it, so neither do I...

Thanks again

No matter what you do, the gauge should read 50% all the time. If it goes a little above that but doesn't overheat, it's time to start looking for one of the components that's starting to malfunction or maybe a small leak that's letting air get into the coolant system.

Don't rely too much on the stock gauge. Like most manufacturers, Chrysler simply put it a glorified idiot light.

While it WILL move past 50% it's certainly not linear. I saw 254* on my ScanGaugeII yesterday and the stock needle wasn't even in the red part yet. Guess they wait until it blows a headgasket, THEN it goes to the red area...

I believe the PT temp gauge is reasonably accurate, if only because so many Cruisers on this forum relate that their gauge runs at a just-below-halfway position (which is actually halfway, if you're very short and the angle is less). At this point, I've not seen where anyone on here had a major overheating problem as long as this position was stable.

But I wouldn't wait until the needle got anywhere near the red, before acting. In fact, any climbing above the normal mark (say, almost to three-quarters) and I'm pulling over to check out what's what.

Well, I really wouldn't worry if the car gets to that temp.
I read somewhere where a manufacturer set their fans to turn on at 230, this just isn't that far away.

I try to keep my car as high as practicable- But it's hard to regulate at that temp as the most I can get is a 205 t-stat, and then it needs to be modded to fit PT water neck-aka connector.

I'd bet on a hot day 50% of vehicles exceed that

yeah, i skipped reading half of the post. DOH
I thought it said 254* and the needle didnt move yet.

With a new radiator, thermostat and a 50/50 mix, i have yet to see anythng higher than 230* on a 90* day in slow rolling rush hour traffic. But, it's only been 2 weeks for me so far so i'm keeping a close eye on it.

I am. It's frustrating. Newly flushed, new coolant, new thermostat, new cap, new radiator. Still runs hot.
