Default Odometer problem, speedometer working fine

woo hoo first post

2001 Pt cruiser (no turbo)

anyway im going to give a bit of a background first here...this was my mothers

car up until my jeep took a shit(rear end went out, no funds to repair, this is

better on gas anywho) as it sits now its got approx. 27k miles on it(thats my

best guess). It sat for the most part of 6-7 years if not more, only being started

every so often. My mother started driving it every day less then a mile a day

(to the store and such) and we had to jump start it almost everytime(ill get

to this later) so when i got it i havent had to jump start it. I started noticing

it about a week or two after i started driving the pt since it seemed the car

ate gas really quick(im not sure how much im getting to a full tank seeing as i

cant use trip)

Now heres whats going on, my milage is all ****ed up!!! ive ran the self test all the gauges test fine, i havent put a scanner on it yet, but my guess is nothing will turn up, the car only threw the (batt. disconnected recently or w.e). what the hell could be the problem?

just a lil more side info, i have 2 extra batts in the back to power my system(the problem was happening before i installed them) no accidents, no other problems that i can think of, if you guys need anymore info just ask!

edit: also every time i put my blinker on over 15mph it dings, my guess is this started happening when the odometer messed up, my mother was driving the car when it just happend one day

Can you be a little more specific on the "mileage is all f'ed up" part?
Is it not showing up at all, or is it stuck on a number, or is it just somehow the wrong number?

hm i seemed to have left that part out...i drive 30 miles to work every day and 30 miles back, it says i drive roughly 5 miles on the odometer(each way), for example, i turned on my trip when i left for DE the other weekend, that alone is 100 miles or so from where i live, and i havent even hit the 200 mile mark on my trip meter yet(which i have not touched since i set it when i left for DE)

so its the trip and the odometer that are not working correctly

My guess is the speed sensor on your trans. Others will chime in if they have a different answer. Can I have it when your done? No wonder yours has such great miles. Figured it would make mine get younger over time too.

So help me god, it sounds like you're driving MY car!

I have a 2001 with the SAME problems! My odometer only records about half the distance traveled, AND my turn signal chimes when used over 15 mph!

No idea what's causing it, but I feel better already knowing I'm not alone.

your my new best friend lol

now ive manually drained all the power out of the system (touching neg. to pos.) then let it sit a half hour, hoping to reset the computer....nothing

also changed out my PCM (nothing wrong with it but was worth a shot) same thing

where is the milage actully stored? is it in the computer or in the cluster...im thinking of popping the cluster out and looking on the board to see any breaks and such... im clueless here and i really want this resolved

I started a thread on this problem when I first got the car. Suggestions from others were; disconnect battery for a while to reset pcm (done - no change), maybe an 'earthing' problem (I installed more ground wires - no change), replace dash clocks (haven't done this but you should know mileage is stored in both the PCM and cluster, and cluster has to come from the exact same model with similar mileage to be sure it works). I have also replaced the multifunction switch, put in a new battery, and I even contacted an independent auto electrician - who told me he never touched Chryslers any more - more trouble than they're worth for him.

I am waiting to have the money to take it to the dealer, but I think if it's not the cluster itself (mine is working fine for the most part, I also have a temp light that never goes off and previous owner took it to a dealer who said faulty light) it has to be connected to one of the speed sensors. The chime is supposed to come on if you leave your turn signal on for a distance of one mile while driving over 15mph, and if it doesn't know how much distance is traveled, that also explains the odometer problem.

That said, a faulty speed sensor would effect how the car handled and would throw a fault code....

I also bought an OBD scan tool to hook up to a computer and there are no fault codes anywhere.

Sorry I can't be more help, but if you EVER get this fixed please PLEASE let me know!
