Angry I'm ready to shoot my 01 PT!@!

Hi everyone, I recently tuned up my PT ( '01 LE NA automatic). I now have a loud hissing (CH-SHH!) sound when revved in Park, and I just noticed that I have no coolant in the reservoir (radiator hoses heat up like they should). When in drive, it takes a second or two longer than it should to start moving or rev up. Idle is fine at around 8-900, the gauges tell me everything is cool, it starts right up, and the engine sounds fine otherwise.

I replaced the EGR tube gasket thinking that would solve it, checked pcv, looked over all the hoses involved in vac (even all that werent).. etc etc . .

Im at wits end, ill post more detail in a bit - i need a smoke!

P.S. Thanks to those who replied to my previous post(s). I have done what you all have suggested , and still cant figure it out. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

have you checked the Vacuum Power Brake Booster? there is a vacuum hose that makes a noise similar to described when is unplugged.
I know you checked all the vacuum hoses.

,,,( i guess i got off on the wrong foot w/ my reply to Jeenka)

Thank you jdpersico, I did not do a thorough inspection, I just chk'd to see if the fittings were still on... shoulda known better and looked harder.

What am I to look for if the VPBB ( vacuum power brake booster) needs to be replaced? is it common for them to need replacing after a certain amount of miles? My PT has 56470 original miles. Its a 2001.

Thanks again for the input, its a great help!

Your brake booster is fine, otherwise you'd be yelling how hard it is to stop the PT - suggestion was to check vacuum hose connection.
When you say you "tuned up" the PT - plugs & wires? Go over everything you did then - because sure sounds like you have a vacuum leak.

Like QSD just said, sure sounds like a vacuum leak. You said you can here the vacuum noise. How about having someone inside the car slightly revving the motor while you listen outside facing the motor with the hood up. Maybe you can pinpoint the area where the leak is.

Vacuum boosters CAN leak and still function-
I think you'd hear it in a good underhood inspection.

Is the 'hiss' causing performance problems?
Perhaps you shouldn't rev in park, NOT at all to be a smart Alec

There are underdash vacuum servos in these cars, I THINK-
perhaps a underdash line fell off?

Talk more about your coolant issue.

The sound seems like it is coming from the center of the compartment - either the rear of the manifold, valve cover, tb to manifold, or any of the myriad of hoses near the egr controller.. I'll probably have to smoke the monster out.

..May I get a pic of that servo? or description? I'm not at leisure to be playing around on the computer when the car doesnt run well lol.

I just noticed that the coolant reservoir is empty. The engine was getting abnormally hot when I was looking around for a leak. The coolant is filthy.

I noticed that the fan isnt kicking on also.. so got to check that. The fuses are good - off to check the relay - I can only imagine how screwing with wires and water will look when I'm supposed to be troubleshooting something air-related

The PT was throwing codes p0123 and 01193 previously, though nothing now. I don't have an OBD or wiring diagram. Is there a way to pull codes that aren't shown in the dash? Does that circuit involve the fan?

The brake booster's hoses are firmly attached and in fair condition. The brake pedal doesn't travel any farther with multiple depressions (engine off). .

Bleh. Sorry, I never did well in English Composition

Probably a cracked exhaust manifold.
