Default Erratic gauge and dash lights activity

Hello, I am having an issue. I'm driving and all of a sudden all dash lights go on, all gauges drop and then goes back to normal. There is no rhyme or reason as to when this happens. Doing 60-70 on expressway or 40 on regular road. Every once in a while when this happens the engine bucks. Can go a week or more with out this happening or can happen 10 times in a 25 mile trip home from work. I have a 2006 conv with 96,000 miles.

Please help

Thanks,
Joe

Why would a weak bettery cause this?? The battery will be 3 years old in 2 weeks. This has been happening since last fall or winter. But went away for months. Now it's back.

Joe,

The battery (when it starts to weaken) does create havoc with the dials, gauges, radio and all thing electrical. Can't hurt to have it checked out. You came here for help and we're telling you what we know about the PT from others having the same trouble.

OK, other things. Are yo getting any faults stored on the computer which happens if the engine light comes on?

You can pull your own fault codes by using the instructions below:

How to retrieve fault codes.

Also when you go to have the battery checked out, look at the battery terminals, Check them to see if they are good and tight and look for any corrosion that would stop full battery power from getting to where it has to go.

I did forget to mention that there was a lot of corrosion on the battery terminals and I cleaned it last week. It was good for a day then started to happen again.

Destroyer, when this happened to me, it was corrosion on the battery terminals and a weak battery. The corrosion was so bad, I needed a new wiring harness (positive side).

Make sure if you replace the battery, you clean the battery terminals, spotlessly. Pay special attention to the interior of the clamps. Also, look to see if corrosion has gone under the insulation (near the positive clamp). Also, after snugging on the clamps, spray with CRC Battery Protectant, so you won't have corrosion problems again for a long while.

Tim

I replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch a year ago. Problem stopped.
