If stayed running after second jump, could be be corroded cable's on either end of the cable's not letting the charge get back to the battery.

this happened to me on friday. i got lucky and had my battery warrantied. someone, Crewzin i think, said there is supposed to be a heat shield of some sort around the battery. heat's a killer, tis' the season. for me the voltage tested fine, amps did not.

the way you wrote that it sounds like the alternator. charge the battery and test it with a volt meter. should be 12.8-14v with the car idling and at least 11.4 with the key off.

i ran my car with the battery disconnected before and it sputtered and died after a few minutes. (i know it's bad, but it was midnight and i was trying to get a friends car home) could be either one, but probably the battery.

No it died after second jump also unless at 2000 or so rpms but once idling to shift it dies off. with gauges and interior lights flashing and jumping around jumper cables got very hot.had to leave it 100 miles away from the house.i have never seen gauges and lights act this way.i could not check water leavel in batt as i did not have a long rachet extension to remove bracket..i have battery shield in good shape.will try in morning to start but sure it will be dead.

thanks for the replies

Found this in a search:

If the cables are real warm and you're not having success, it's a sign that your jumper cables have a problem. If they warm up, it means there's too much resistance in the line. There should be very little cable resistance. If the jumper cables are frayed or rusty at the clamps they won't work.

The same could be said for the battery cables in the car as well. Causing it to draw too many amps. All these thing connections should be gone over before you start throwing parts at it.

I agree with CREWZIN about the cables. You ask how long to change the alternator in your last post; did you determine that is the problem?

The symptoms you describe could also be a shorted battery. If you suspect that is the case, I cannot stress enough to be very careful. If you continually try to jump a shorted battery it can explode. Handle it with kid gloves! A shorted battery can also explode if it is jostled around.

The heat where I live has been terrible and is a primary cause of a shorted battery.
