Default engine trouble, no error code

I'm sorry if this has already been asked and answered, but I wasn't able to find it by searching old posts. I'm having some engine trouble and I tried to get an error code by doing the on/off/on/off/on trick, and nothing showed up, not even "done". Is there any other way to find out what's wrong without taking it to a shop?
Thanks!

The check engine light will only come on if the engine is malfunctioning in a way that it would affect emissions. It will not turn on for every performance issue.

The car initially turned on and when I pressed the gas pedal it moved but in a very jumpy way; the second time the same thing happened and the engine shut itself off after a few seconds. The check engine light turns on and flashes 10 times before staying on.

Tell us about the car. Details!

Any engine work recently performed?

When did this problem present itself?

Also, what's the status of the ignition system (plugs and wires). Here's a post where an owner had the same symptoms and new plugs and wires solved the problem.

It's an '04 Turbo. After about 15 seconds if I press the gas at all the engine shuts itself off but it's ok before then. Recently had the starter replaced but that's the only work that's been done lately. Showing my absolute ignorance here but how would I go about checking the ignition system?

Sounds like a fuel pump to me.

So it idles but will not accept any gas under load? Can you rev it in Park?

Check engine light:

` Turn key to ON (but do not start) 3 times within 15 seconds.

` On the last time keep in ON position (not started).

` Look at odometer and record the codes. They should start with "P" followed by 4 numbers.

I've tried to get an error code that way several times and nothing happens. Update: engine no longer starting at all.

Back to basics then, check for fuel delivery and a spark...go from there
