Default AC clutch replacement

On the wifes 2006 PT the AC works (cold air and no noise) for a bit then hot air but you can hear the compressor click in, then a loud grinding noise with smoke from the compressor. Cut the AC off and back on it works again for a little while then same noise and smoke. Sound like the clutch has gone out to me and found a rebuilding kit (factory part 05014572AA) for $37. Rockauto has a rebuilt compressor and clutch for $250 without core.

Is it better on these to replace the entire compressor? Has anyone replaced just the clutch? special tools to do so?

Years ago i have replaced just the clutches without issues but on newer models im finding everyone replacing the entire unit.

I think the primary reason why folks replace the whole unit is warranty. With a recon unit you have a warranty and a guaranteed walkaway repair. In terms of labour, it is simply not worthwhile financially doing the job twice and ending up having to replace the whole compressor anyway. Worse if it's a comeback, as your reputation is also suffering

Im leaning about 75% towards the rockauto compressor. Anyone had bad/good issues with that unit?

I have dealt with Rock Auto a couple of times already on my trip here, their service has been first class and the quality of their parts is excellent, they carry a good range of branded and unbranded parts too. They always seem to have good prices, or at least sensible ones! I haven't had the need to make a warranty claim or ask for a replacement item from them, but given my limited experience of them so far, I would say they would be more than happy to accept a no hassle return

I take it there's nowhere near you that does recon exchange units?

Yeah i got a lot of stuff from them and havent had any real issues. It pays to look at the different vendors they carry though. Some things are cheap for a reason.

As for local, yeah the usual parts stores but they are a lot higher even if i provide a core rock auto is cheaper for the same brand.

Something a critical as a compressor i wouldnt buy a used one either. Dont know how long it has sat getting crud inside just to damage the rest of the ac system.

I meant a local place that does nothing but A/C rather than the likes of the car accessory places, small parts stores. They usually do recon units on an exchange basis with a warranty. You are right though, secondhand is a non starter. I would say go for the Rock Auto one if there's nowhere near you at reasonable money

When I lived in Florida everybody used this company with good results...A rebuilt compressor was about $100 compared to $250 on Pep Boys, Advance Auto , etc...

They only show a 2001 on the catalog. Not sure how the ship time would be either. Gonna order the rockauto looks like.

As for an AC repair shop local, no. Only thing here is shops who go and get a rebuilt one and install it.
