Default DIY A/C system replacement...

Anyone here ever replaced their A/C components themselves?
According to the dealer mechanic I took it to,my 2003 needs a new compressor and dryer, which is a $1000 job. There's also a leak from a switch on the compressor so I've lost the gas.
I was wondering how hard it would be to take out all the old components, replace them? I would just need to take the car in for filling up of the gas.
A local mechanic says he'd charge $300 for the filling up but since they wouldn't be doing the work themselves, couldn't give a guaranty.
Anyone here has gone through this process? Where would be the best place to buy the components?

$300?? What a rip off!

You can do this but you need to be able to purge everything out of the lines and condenser & evaporator before you button everything back up.

Why do you need to replace the compressor? What failed?

You also need to replace the orifice tube, orings and schrader valves...well, if you're gonna do it right.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I read through the previous discussion on DIY AC install. Must admit that it appears I'm out of my element on going ahead with this project. I installed my own AC system at home but had access to the vacuum pump at the time and some tech advice from the refrigeration techs I worked with. Guess I could probably rent a pump, if that's possible.
Anyhow, the AC tech at the local dealer said the valves inside the compressor were not keeping the pressure, which is why it was cycling on and off all the time. He also said there was a leak on one of the switches (high pressure?) on the compressor so that the gas had mostly all leaked out.( said when he tried to refill the system it all sprayed out from the leaking switch..Makes sense..?)

It's a 2003 so I'm reluctant to spend $1000 on it for a new AC, although the car is in pretty good shape.

Personally I hate A/C and grew up without it, so don't miss having it. It's never really that warm in the UK that we "need" it rather than want it for bragging rights

However A/C is something that is only too welcome on a really hot day here(Canada) or there in the U.S, so I'm guessing you'll miss it before the year is out

It's an expensive repair, but if done correctly, and that's the important bit, it should last ya, well at least until the next time it breaks down again anyway
