On most cars with airbags you'll usually find a strain gauge in the seat, a switch in the seat belt buckle and a tensioner sensor in the belt roller. The strain gauge is usually calibrated for weight at the factory or recalibrated by the dealer if it's replaced. The belt tensioner sensor and buckle switch is usually replaced along with the seat belt. Sounds like your seat belt tensioner sensor is goosed

hi there is no code at all. it only says "passenger pretensioner circuit open". and can't get any more info. the horn and cruise work ok so that leaves out the clockspring. i can look at the seatbelt assembly but not sure what to look for. would i see a broken wire? thanks jim.

For whatever it's worth, the air bag light in my '03 turbo can take a long time to go out sometimes when I start the car. Something seems to be really sensitive to battery voltage, since it only happens after I haven't driven the car in a couple of days, or on cold winter mornings. Last time I had the battery replaced, it stopped doing it altogether for quite awhile.

But with the message you're getting, I think the recommendation to check the spring tensioner is spot on. Not sure what it looks like either, but I suspect there is an electrical connector involved. If so, the first thing I'd do is unplug it and plug it back in a few times, and also check for broken wires.
