Default Horn and Radio Screen Intermittent?

2001 PT Cruiser 96,000 miles.
Radio and horn are original and never been replaced.

Car engine running:
-Radio screen turns on and off intermittently but radio always works normally.
-Horn stops working when radio screen is off, the moment the radio screen turns
on the horn works.

Have removed and cleaned contacts of: Radio fuse and Horn relay. Battery terminals cleaned and ground side body connections look good and tight.
Don't see how one circuit has to do with the other.

mine and others have this same issue. When it happens, raise the steering wheel slightly and it fixes it temporarily. There's a short in the steering column/dash area i guess

Check around the area of the dash for a large multiple connector block, sounds to me like you have bad/ corroded connections or a corroded wire somewhere in the dash loom.

Amazing! I just applied some upward pressure on the steering wheel and Viola! it turns on the radio screen and the horn works.
I and my wife, the PT driver, finds this almost funny.
It will probably go back to intermittent but I'll soon take off the steering covers off and look at the wire harness and connectors.

I suspect, as suggested, that this is either a pass to ground or a connection not fully contacting. Of course, I'll share what and if I find something.

Thanks for your replies, as always!

ya, mine used to do that and i just upped the steering wheel a smidgeon. no problems since last year. pretty well known the harness is too tight in that area.

if i were you i'd release the steering lock and move it up about a quarter inch then lock it again.

The last car that I seen that had a harness that was too tight across the dash was a Vauxhall Vectra(GM) in the UK, they stretched the old loom from the Cavalier to fit initially. They also done the same thing with the Nova/ Corsa with the same results, i.e burning down folks garages, the Corsa even took out a few dealership showrooms too before they finally fixed it

Someone posted the other day that their mechanic found a bad ground wire in the column somewhere. They weren't sure exactly where...

I have poked around in mine and I didn't find anything obvious. The steering wheel may need to come off...
wardski likes this.

i'm a mechanic in ny ,have just dealt with pt radio/horn problem ,it's nothing to do with any parts or wiring harness issues,it's a riveted connection between dash bracket and steering column support if you jump with a wire between brkt and support with key on your radio will light up,jump a 12ga stranded wire between the fwd support stud and rearward support bracket half's(stud towards rear of car is fully insulated from brkt),i,m going to try to attach pix, this will fix solve the mystery

Great info and pics!

I will have to try this out and see if it works on mine.
