Default Need Help - Knocking/Clunking only when coasting??

Ok I have got one for you. 02 PT with 106k. This has got me stumped. It started last night I noticed merging off the freeway that I get a steady rhythmic (according to speed) "knock" or "clunking" coming from up front. It only happens when my foot is off the gas and it goes away when I apply the brakes, returns when I let go of the brakes. Not so much a vibration though as I can't really feel it in the floor (yet). Honestly it sounds like a flat tire but is not. Does anybody have a clue to what this might be? Thank you for any help you may have.

I'd start with the breaking system. Also check to see if it is different when you steer right or left.

After a lot of searching, I am starting to think it is one of the front wheel bearings. Is there any way to diagnose which side could be bad? I cannot tell while I am driving.

Find a curvy road, or a big empty parking lot. Do "S" turns...that will load the bearings seperately. If the noise goes away when turning right, it is probably the right front wheel bearing. If it goes away turning left, uhhh, I bet you can figure that one out.

Unless, of course, I have it backwards. Which could be a real possibility!

Yea Rob, I think it's the other way round. Taking the pressure off the right bearing when turning left would take away any bearing noise on the right.

Not arguing with you...just trying to clear it in my mind. If you turn left, doesn't that put more weight on the right side wheels, thue "loading" the bearing more?

Or do I need another beer?

Thinking about it more, your right, too much ice cream for desert. Turning left puts weight on the right.
