Default High idle

Hello everyone. My name is Dee and I am new to the forum. This forum has been so very helpful to me in the past by reading your helpful post. I got a new problem and could not find a previous post. If it has been posted before, I apologize for asking again. I have a 2001 Limited Edition I bought off of the show room floor in 2001. I am the only owner and it has 119,079 miles.

My problem is, at start up, I have a very high immediate idle up to 6000 rpms. It holds there or fluctuate from 5500 - 6000 and will not release. This problem began after replacing the battery. I have replaced batteries before and this has never happened.

I have read some post here about rough or surging idles, but not anything about a high idle. I have put on a new cam sensor from Chrysler, a new up stream Bosch 02 sensor, and new pcv valve/hose, and cleaned the IAC with carb cleaner.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and sorry for the long post.

Dee

I'd just replace the IAC. You cleaned it in response to the issue, right?

Usually the high idle is caused by a split, cracked or missing vacuum line. Look around for one that came off.

I agree with Crewzin. My first thought was a vacuum issue especially when you said it happened after replacing the battery.

you either have a large, like 3/4" vacuum line disconnected, or the throttle body isn't closing all the way. 5500-6k is too high for the idle air control to be the issue. i broke my iac cleaning it. with the plunger pressed all the way in(fully open) the car idles ~3,500

i had a rag get partially sucked in a throttle body once. it prevented it from closing. the car got stuck revving high while i was driving it and it was terrifying(:yet so easy to fix:)

Thanks for the input guys., I cleaned the IAC because I read in a post that it gets clogged sometimes and it effects the idle. I checked all around for a loose hose and could not find one. I did notice that on the throttle body, there are 2 cables. The one closes to the firewall has slack in it and the one closes to the radiator has no slack. When the accelerator is pressed and released, the back cable still has slack and the front one does not. Could that be the problem? If so, how do I tighten it?

The cables your talking about are for the throttle body and the cruise control. Shouldn't have anything to do with the high idle.

Default Mechanical part issue

Guys.... this is a cable and or throttle plate opening problem. A usual vacuum air intake can not cause that high of an engine speed indicated in post #1

Cary nice picture of your engine as always!

Hot rodders are a strange lot. They’ll spend thousands of dollars on performance parts to improve acceleration, handling or braking, but most won’t spend one dime on testing to discover if all those parts really made a difference!
Remember this: All modifications build on each other SO the better you configure your mods to work with each other, the more powerful your car will be.

So if the above post is correct, grab the part with the cables and move it and see if it is sticking or what. With the engine off till you see whats up.

The one closest to the radiator goes to the pedal. So if it is really tight it may be hung up as stated above.
